BEAUTIFUL LOVE WONDERFUL LIFE TV
The film entered the public domain in 1974 and repeated showings by TV stations in the '70s and '80s resulted in it becoming a much loved holiday classic. The other favorite cinematic holiday story at our house is Frank Capra’s 1946 film "It’s A Wonderful Life." The film wasn’t terribly successful when first released and wasn’t even considered a Christmas story. I continue to find deeper meaning with each repeated reading and watching of the story. Now I also read "A Christmas Carol" every year. "A Christmas Carol," as written by Dickens, has depths of emotion – sorrow, anger at the human condition, fear at what we may become, and joy at the story’s resolution – that is only partially captured in the films. But I had never read "A Christmas Carol" until a few years ago when I finally sat down to read it. Scott (which I love for the beautiful sets and Scott’s frightening performance as a truly mean-spirited old Scrooge and almost equally frightening transformation into a reborn Scrooge). I watch one of the versions of "A Christmas Carol" every year - usually either the 1951 film Scrooge starring Alastair Sim (probably the film closest in spirit to Dickens’s writing) or the 1984 film "A Christmas Carol" starring George C. I haven’t seen Mister Magoo’s version in many years, but as I recall it was a surprisingly effective telling of the story.

Like many people of my generation, my introduction to Charles Dickens novella "A Christmas Carol" was watching the animated Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol. We are in the midst of Hanukkah and soon we will observe more winter solstice celebrations - Christmas, Yule, Saturnalia, Kwanzaa, and many others celebrated around the world.
